Generals take lead in season series against Silversmiths
The Rome Generals took the lead in the New York Collegiate Baseball League season series against the Sherrill Silversmiths, posting a 6-2 victory on Sunday at DeLutis Field.
The Generals are 4-3 this season against the Silversmiths. Overall, Rome is 18-15 while Sherrill slips to 17-18.
Arik Sypher got the win for Rome, giving up two runs on six hits and struck out five.
Devan Springfield homered for the Generals and went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Caleb Kerbs, Christian Aybar and Joseph Castellanos all went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Jake Coro went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Sherrill, while Craig Sandford also went 2-for-4.
Both teams return to action tonight as Sherrill hosts the Syracuse Salt Cats at Noyes Park at 5 o’clock, while Rome travels to Olean for a 7 p.m. start.
Also in action on Saturday were the Generals, who downed the Wellsville Nitros 5-2 at home.
Rome Free Academy graduate Colin Shunk went six innings and gave up two runs on two hits and struck out five.
Getting the win was Martin Tolson Jr., giving up two hits.
Jameson Carey had two RBIs for the Generals, while Evan Delaney went 2-for-4.
Timpanelli lifts Sherrill
Vincent Timpanelli’s fifth inning home run proved to be the difference as the Sherrill Silversmiths blanked the Cortland Crush, 1-0, on Saturday at Noyes Park.
Oneida’s Mitch Cavanagh threw a complete game, giving up four hits and struck out eight. He also issued two walks.
