Four to be inducted into Rome Bowling Hall of Fame

The Rome Bowling Hall of Fame will induct four new members during its annual awards dinner later this month.

Karen Bauer, Sue Hluska, Ed Holmes and Richard Nasci will be inducted during the dinner to be held on Saturday, March 24, at the Beeches. The dinner will start at 7:30 p.m.

The Hall of Fame is once again holding a combined ceremony honoring men’s and women’s inductees.

Here’s a look at this year’s inductees, based on information provided by dinner organizers:

• Karen Bauer

Bauer started bowling at the age of 16 and remains active as a member of the Finks League for which she was president for 38 years. She has also participated in the Spare Tires League. She has a career high average of 155, high game of 220 and high series of 550.

A past director of the Rome Women’s Bowling Association, she has served on various committees during her tenure. She served on the New York State Senior Senior Singles Tournament committee when it was held at King Pin Lanes in 2004 as well as the State 600 Club committee when it was held in the city in 2005. She is a member of the 500 Club and has participated in many city, state and state senior tourneys.

Her bowling accomplishments include league champion and 500 Club tourney champ four times, and she won the Senior Singles tourney in 2009 and was a member of the winning team in the RWBA city tourney in 2012. She has also placed in the team, doubles and singles events at the state tourney. She teamed with Terri Nasci to place 30th in the doubles competition in the nationals held at the OnCenter in Syracuse.

• Sue Hluska

Hluska got her start as a junior bowler at Mohawk Lanes in the 1970s and is still active in the Happy League for which she has been president for over 20 years. She has a high game of 268 and high series of 725, and her career high average of 195 came during the 2008-09 season.

She was vice president and director for the RWBA and has served on many committees. She is past chairman of the 500/600 Tournament and sergeant of arms for the Rome Women’s 600 Club and has participated in the 1300/2000 tournaments, city tournament and state tourney for over 20 years.

Among her bowling accomplishments are winning the RWBA doubles event in 1985 and sharing the singles title in 1996 with Norma Gymburch. She is a three-time winner of the 1300/2000 tourney and was a member of the team event in the city tourney in 2011.

She has placed in the top 10 for the doubles and singles events at the state tourney two times, with a high series of 725 bowled in the singles event in 2016 when she finished fifth.

• Ed Holmes

Holmes started bowling in 1992 and has held the offices of treasurer in the Mohawk Men’s League and president in the Eddie’s Restaurant League.

In 1999 he teamed up with Mike Ferlo Jr. to win the city doubles championship. He also has captured several league championships, including titles in the Crisan Auto Care League and The Cuz-Hill League.

Honored as the RBA’s 2017 bowler of the year, Holmes has posted many honor scores throughout his career.

He has thirteen 300 games along with two 800 series. He has a high game of 300 and a high series of 827 along with a high average of 232.

• Richard Nasci

Nasci has received honorable mention for the RBA’s bowler of the year award for two years in a row and is a past champion of the King Pin Club.

A past member of the PBA, he has several honor scores to his credit, including two 300 games and two 800 series and a high average of 228. His high triple is 801.

Tickets for the dinner are $35 for steak and $30 for chicken and are available at King Pin Lanes or from association members. Tickets are $15 for any past Hall of Fame member who would like to attend.

The dinner will be preceded by a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m.
