District V American Legion baseball playoffs open Sunday
The field has been set for the District V American Legion baseball tournament.
Legion officials on Friday announced the schedule for the eight-team double-elimination tournament which will begin on Sunday.
The higher seeded teams will be hosting games on both Sunday and Monday before the tourney moves to Murnane Field in Utica. Games will be played at Murnane on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and, if necessary, on Friday.
The Navy Division is composed of No. 1 seed Whitestown, No. 2 Smith, No. 3 Oriskany and No. 4 Ilion. The Air Force Division is made up of No. 1 Sherrill, No. 2 Utica, No. 3 Adrean and No. 4 Love.
District V officials said that Adrean won the tiebreaker over Love based on record against playoff teams.
Whitestown, 14-3 in the league, is scheduled to close out its regular season today at 1 p.m. at SUNY Poly against against Moran/Sylvan Beach.
A loss by Whitestown would result in a three-way tie along with Smith and Oriskany for first place, but district officials said that Whitestown would hold the tiebreaker over Smith and Oriskany based on record against playoff teams.
Smith, which is 14-4 in the league, won the tiebreaker over Oriskany based on record against teams seeded above them, against Whitestown and Sherrill.
Smith will host Adrean at Rome Free Academy Stadium on Sunday as Love makes the trip to SUNY Poly to take on Whitestown. Both games are slated for 1 o’clock.
Oriskany will head to Murnane Field to take on Utica on Sunday, while Sherrill hosts Ilion at Noyes Park. Both games are at 5 o’clock.
