Comets will open season at home against champs

UTICA — The Utica Comets will open their 2018-19 AHL season at home on Friday, Oct. 5 against the defending Calder Cup champion Toronto Marlies.

Home team opening dates were announced by the AHL on Tuesday, and the full schedule is expected to be released today.

The Marlies ended the Comets’ 2017-18 season, defeating them in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs in five games.

Toronto then went on to sweep Syracuse and Lehigh Valley in four games before beating Texas in a seven-game championship series.

In season-opening games, the Marlies hold a 2-1-0-0 record over the Comets.

Over the course of the 2018-19 regular season, the two squads will meet six times.
