Comets routed by hockey rival Crunch on home ice
UTICA — The Utica Comets suffered a 6-1 loss to American Hockey League rival Syracuse on Wednesday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
Patrick Wiercioch scored the lone Utica goal midway through the first period while the Comets were shorthanded. Jayson Megna and Cam Darcy picked up the assists on Wiercioch’s goal.
Adam Erne tied the game with 2:03 left in the first period for Syracuse. Carter Verhaeghe scored twice in the second period, followed by Matthew Spencer putting a goal past Utica goalie Richard Bachman. Erne scored his second of the night in the third period and capped off the hat-trick on a power play chance for the Crunch.
Bachman made 22 saves for Utica in the loss. Louis Domingue made 23 saves for Syracuse in earning the win.
The Comets are back on the ice on Saturday night as theytravel to take on the Providence Bruins at 7:05 p.m.
