Federal health officials say the 5-year relative survival rate — which estimates the percentage of cancer patients who will have not died from their cancer 5 years after diagnosis — for breast cancer is 88.6 percent. The survival rate is significantly higher, statistics show, the earlier the cancer is detected. The rates are lower for breast cancer which is not discovered until it has reached stages III or IV, the Centers for Disease Control says. The 5-year-rate among all cancer patients was 65.5 percent.
