Verona woman fulfills dream to start fashion business
VERONA — With a life-long dream of owning her own fashion business, hometown native Katherine Scherz has started to sell her products locally through her new online store.
The business, Katherine Dominique, is a men’s and women’s accessory brand that provides handmade, high quality products designed and made entirely by Scherz, a 2013 graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.
“Ever since I was in elementary school, I’ve been intrigued by fashion,” said Scherz. “During my high school years, whenever time permitted, I enjoyed creating fashion-related designs and then making them by hand. While attending Cazenovia College, I took part in six fashion shows and it was personally rewarding when I saw how nicely my designs were portrayed by the models.”
After Scherz graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design from Cazenovia in 2017, the 22-year-old said she thought it would be the ideal time to form her own online business that focused on fashion-related accessories.

When Scherz decided to start Katherine Dominique, she said she had known nothing about starting a business, so it took much research and “many steps” to complete in order to get her business legalized and off the ground. “The process took a total of six months from planning to the launching of my website, which I designed and created myself,” Scherz said. “I also had to begin creating merchandise along the way so they would be ready to sell.”
She said, “For the neckties, it took some time to finalize the design and production process because I wanted to be able to make them to the best of my ability. To accomplish that, I had to draft patterns and sew samples, then test the different sewing techniques until I was pleased with how the final product turned out.”
Scherz officially launched Katherine Dominique Fashion & Accessories on Dec. 1, 2017. She now sells neckties fit for both men and women. The ties are made from different specialty fabrics, as well as cotton for a more casual, but “still stylish” look. “I am taking custom orders and plan on expanding my business in the future by selling a more unique variety of products,” she said.
Also, from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 21, Scherz will have a pop-up store at Bagg’s Square Cafe, which is located at 421 Broad St. in Utica.
Customers will be able to purchase products made by Scherz, as well as enjoy some breakfast and lunch.
Scherz will feature ties, tie necklaces, scarves and other products at the pop-up store.
“This will be an excellent opportunity for people to see the various fashion accessories that I have available for sale as well as ask me about custom orders,” the owner said. “I encourage people to stop by to shop at my pop-up fashion store, as well as check out the fantastic menu that Bagg’s Square Cafe has to offer.”
