Talented RFA field hockey team returns five seniors, four all-stars

The captains of the 2017 Rome Free Academy field hockey team are Victoria Sestito, Madison Cudhea and Kaitlyn Mastracco. I think this team is going to be special and the girls are so excited to get the season underway.

MacKenzie Williams is back as head coach for this year’s varsity field hockey team. Her team will be in action Tuesday, Sept 5 against Whitesboro at the Stadium at 6 p.m.  She has five seniors returning: Cudhea, Sestito, Makenna Barton, Sarah Kirk and Madisynn Reilly.

Cudhea is the goalkeeper and was a Tri-Valley League second-team all-star last year as a junior. Mastracco, Reilly and Sestito were first-team TVL all-stars last year and I am so excited to watch this team with so much talent.

Rome sports look a like: Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and Rome Sports Hall of Famer and former high school football coach Jerry Corigliano.

From the mailbag: Rome Catholic High football legendary head coach Dennis Skibitski sent me a message. In 1984, Glen Bielby rushed for 1,589 yards for a city record. Last week I mentioned RFA running back Tom Pugh had 1,547 yards. Wow! Two great running backs and they both played in 1984. Unbelievable! Skibitski is retired and lives in Atlanta, Ga.

From the mailbag: I received a beautiful letter from Ted Lenio. He is the person who nominated Kermit Cadrette to the Rome Sports Hall of Fame a few years ago. He is back in Rome after being away teaching school in Ethiopia. Welcome home to one of Rome’s outstanding runners and athletes.

Coach Stan Evans reminded me that former RFA varsity basketball coach Charles Edkins was not spelled Elkins? I fat fingered his name in last week’s column from my iPad! Coach Edkins coached the Black Knights from 1945-50 and had an excellent record of 50-39.

I played golf with Police Chief Kevin Beach last week. He shot a 35 on the back nine at Teugega Country Club and he lipped out an eagle putt on 18 for a birdie. He is the best golfer I have played with this year and one of Rome’s finest!

I sleep well at night knowing our city has the most outstanding police department in the country in my opinion.

Do you remember Sherry Reilly? She is a 1987 RCH graduate who was outstanding in soccer and softball. She is married with three boys and lives in Alexandria, Va. She is the only young woman coaching Little League Baseball in the Washington D.C. area she lives in.

Food of the week: Sweet corn is peaking now in Rome and the most delicious corn in America is sold at Anken Farms on Turin Road and Chmielewski’s in Ridge Mills. Our city is so fortunate to have two great Farmer Markets for this delicious treat.

Our country must reject the idea that every time a law’s broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker? I think now is the time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his or hers actions!
