Grizzlies 12U girls team closes out season with playoff crown
CAMILLUS — The Rome Grizzlies 12U girls ice hockey team finished their season on Sunday by capturing the championship of the Snowbelt Hockey League playoffs held at Shove Park.
The Grizzlies advanced to the finals in the round-robin tournament and posted a 5-4 win over Midstate in the title game.
Drew Kopek scored her second goal of the game off a rebound in front of the net off a shot by Alyssa Nardslico with 24 seconds remaining to break a 4-4 tie.
Ella Greico, Hailey Kwiatkowski and Alexis Stivali had the other Rome goals, and goalies Elizabeth Schieferstine and Regan Gecewicz combined for 25 saves.
Earlier in the playoffs, the Grizzlies downed the Elmira Jackals, 3-1; skated to a 6-6 tie with the Valley Eagles and notched a 5-0 win over Midstate.
Rome ended the season with a record of 26-15-4.
The team had previously won the championship in the Oswego “Girl Power” tourney, reached the finals of the Grizzlies “Fall Brawl” tourney and won the bronze medal at in the Empire State Winter Games.
