Fort Stanwix to honor Fourth of July
On Wednesday, July 4, Fort Stanwix National Monument will host an event in honor of the nation’s birthday — and highlight the rich Revoluntionary War-era history of the area.
Public readings of the Declaration of Independence will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., followed by salutes to the new nation, at Fort Stanwix, located in downtown Rome at the intersection of Black River Boulevard, James Street and East Dominick Street.
Visitors will have plenty of opportunities to pay homage to the history on Wednesday, including a chance to sign the Declaration of Independence, attend a 9:30 a.m. memorial service at the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier — located across the street at the corner of James and Liberty streets, and a 2 p.m. 18th century life demonstration.
The Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776 and established the United States of America as a nation independent of Great Britain. The first public reading took place in New York City on July 9.
“Bring your family to experience the words of the Declaration. Sign your own copy of the Declaration of Independence. Or, just take time to explore the park and our nation’s history,” said park ranger Kelly Roman. “Come learn about story behind the fireworks, and have some 18th century fun too.”
There is plenty of fun, and local history to enjoy all summer long, according to the park and its staff. Among the upcoming events at Fort Stanwix National Monument is a Historic Sites Bicycle Tour on Sunday, July 15.
A schedule of park events can be found on www.nps.gov/fost. All park events are free. For information, call 315-338-7730.
