Fort Drum soldiers graduate from SUNY Poly program

Ten soldiers from the Army’s Fort Drum base have graduated from an advanced manufacturing technician training program in conjunction with SUNY Polytechnic Institute and other area colleges, SUNY Poly announced.

The 56-hour hands-on training program through SUNY Poly’s Northeast Advanced Technological Education Center was in partnership with Mohawk Valley Community College, Jefferson Community College, and Fort Drum’s Soldier for Life — Transition Assistance Program.

The goal of the National Science Foundation-funded project is to provide marketable, in-demand skills for transitioning soldiers and connect them to the state’s advanced manufacturers, said SUNY Poly. Training is offered to soldiers scheduled to separate from service within a year, plus some recently transitioned veterans.

SUNY Poly is “thrilled to support this important program that gives back to our nation’s heroes who have selflessly served our nation” in partnership with MVCC, JCC and the Fort Drum transition program, said college interim President Bahgat Sammakia.

MVCC President Randall VanWagoner said “successful companies are always looking for the best and brightest to carry on the high level of quality for their clients and customers, and now they have potential hires that are equipped and ready to walk into the workforce thanks to this training....It is our honor to play a role in helping veterans transition to the workforce and to know that companies are receiving the very best in employees.”

Several companies have participated in the program, meeting with soldiers to talk about their organizations, products, and employment opportunities, said SUNY Poly.

Among them are: Bartell Machinery, Indium Corporation, Danfoss Silicon Power, Norsk Titanium, GlobalFoundries, SUNY Poly’s Albany NanoTech Complex Foundry, Panasonic Eco Solutions Solar NY,
HMI Metal Powders-Pratt & Whitney, Anaren, and Allied Motion.
