Five seniors lead RFA boys soccer squad
The seniors on this year’s Rome Free Academy boys varsity soccer team are: Michael Haag, Jackson Sorbello, Andrew Abreu, Andre Campbell and Noah O’Connor.
Chad Reese is one of my favorite varsity coaches in the area and he has a special group this year. This year’s team is very young with lots of sophomores and juniors. They play at home this Tuesday, Sept. 12 against New Hartford at 4:30 p.m. I have a great idea. Let’s get out to watch the Black Knights play on your way home from work.
The captains of the 2017 RFA boys soccer team are: Sorbello, O’Connor, Zach Wilbert and Dylan Gannon.
Did you know this is Reese’s eighth season at the helm of the Black Knights soccer program? His career record is 54-54-6 makes him one of the most successful soccer coaches in many years.
Do you remember Mike Sees? Everyone remembers his Rome Sports Hall of Fame brother Greg. They were awesome players and perhaps the best front-court in the history of Rome High School basketball. Mike was 6-foot-6 and played for Rome Catholic High back in 1964-65. His coach was Frank Didio and they played a tough schedule including powerhouses Notre Dame and RFA. Mike went on to play college basketball at Colgate and should be considered someday for induction into our Rome Sports Hall of Fame.
Did you know legendary Rome Catholic coaches Mike Adey and Jim Kenny were guards on those early Redwing basketball teams and Frank Didio instructed them to get the “rock” to the Sees brothers? Smart coach.
Bob VanMeter graduated from RFA back in 1975. He was a very good athlete and played varsity soccer, basketball and baseball for the Black Knights. I played against him back in the 1980s and he was one of the best defensive players that ever guarded me.
Pick of the week: Giants 27, Cowboys 17. I feel the Giants have a Super Bowl-caliber type team this year. Sunday night special!
Geek of the week: the Boston Red Sox for using electronic devices to steal signs against the New York Yankees.
The oldest high school rivalry in New York State football dates back to 1892.
Rome vs Utica and it will continue on Saturday when RFA plays Proctor. This year’s game will be away with a 1:30 p.m. start.
Pick of the week: RFA 27, Proctor 21. Look for RFA quarterback Tristan Hunzinger to have a great game for a big victory on the road.
A few weeks ago I wrote a piece about John Mody in this sports column. I knew he was very sick and I wanted him to read it. He passed away last week and our city mourns the loss of a great man and special athlete. Our condolences go out to wife Sarah and daughter Marisa and Rome parents RoseMary and John and extended family. May he rest in peace.
Patriotism! I’m patriotic almost to the point of self-consciousness, but I love my country the way I love a friend or a child of my own. When a NFL athlete disrespects our country before a football game I think of all our soldiers who gave their life for that flag. My two years of serving my country in Vietnam (U.S. Army) has had a lasting impact in my life!
