Chewie takes top place in Pet Photo Contest
Chewie put his best paw forward this week and graciously accepted his first place prize in the 2018 Rome Sentinel Pet Photo Contest.
As first prize winner, Chewie and his owners received a gift basket including a frisbee, a free grooming, and a bottle of red wine. But, perhaps the biggest winners were an array of area animal rescue and charities, who receive proceeds from the annual contest.
Weighing in at 103 pounds and standing at a lumbering 27 inches, Chewie is a handsome and playful yet well-behaved year-and-a-half-old German Shepherd.
He is named for Chewbacca from “Star Wars.”
He was the top place finisher from nearly 150 entries this year. Rounding out the top 10 were: 2. Roxy; 3. Parker; 4. Sammy; 5. Chloe; 6. Juli; 7. Tillie and Jack; 8. Hades and Nova; 9. Sassy and 10. Abbey.
In his spare time, Chewie enjoys a good game of fetch as well as playing catch say his owners Chris and Lisa Davis.
“He really likes going to Lowe’s,” added Lisa, who snapped the prize-winning photo of the photogenic pooch.
“He’s an East German Working Line Shepherd,” explained Chewie’s owners. “So he’s a bit stockier, and he doesn’t have that slanted rear-end you see on some of them.”
Currently, Chewie is enrolled at Canine Sports Unlimited, where he has taken intermediate and advanced obedience classes. He is slated to take high-level classes this summer.
“He’s not a Jedi yet — his training’s not complete,” joked Chris.
Chewie is one of three Davis family pets. After Chewie’s adoption, the Davis’ adopted his mother, Faith, from the same breeder, Vonsila Kennels in Manlius. They also have a cat named Rocky.
“They get along great,” said Lisa of the three, jokingly adding that “Rocky trained him.”
At the time of writing, Chewie had yet to respond to requests for clarification on who is a good boy.
Voting for the annual contest ended June 4. As every year, entry to the contest is free, and voting costs $1. Proceeds this year will benefit animal organizations, including Angels of Fur K9 Rescue, Lainey’s Army/Dr. Lawton, the Humane Society of Rome, and others.
