ONEIDA — Every April is nationally designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. During this month, the Help Restore Hope Center will be spreading awareness about sexual assault prevention and advocating for survivors of sexual assault locally in Madison and Chenango counties with a number of awareness and fundraising events.

On Wednesday, April 18, the Gorman Foundation Community Center, 1081 Northside Shopping Center, will host the Madison County Domestic & Sexual Violence Coalition Meeting from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

The goal is to engage the community and discuss resources available in Madison County for support and counseling for the victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes, according to event organizers.

No one should have to suffer from sexual assault or domestic violence, if we act together we can make a difference and help survivors, organizers added.

The 2018 program updates and topics include: DA Advocate report, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) project update, local law enforcement response to sexual assault; and New York State Police Campus Sexual Assault Unit.

The program will also include a Survivor’s Journey presented by “Marissa.”

“Because sexual assault affects everyone—survivors, family, friends, loved ones—we all have a unique role in challenging sexual assault,” states Sara Haag, Liberty Resources Divisional Director, Family Services Madison and Chenango Counties. “Let’s talk about how we can support survivors and help end sexual assault on campus and in our communities.”
