Rome ‘Relay for Life’ meeting Tuesday at Ava Dorfman Center
“Relay for Life of Rome” will host a meeting at Ava Dorfman Senior Center, 305 E. Locust St., Tuesday, March 20.
Banking and luminaries will start at 5:30 p.m., with the meeting and committee reports to follow at 6 p.m. Meetings are generally finished by 7 p.m. For more information about Relay for Life, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org/relay or www.RelayForLife.org/RomeNY.
The informational evening is open to everyone in the community that is interested in participating in the Relay For Life of Rome on June 2 and 3. Money raised will fight cancer by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.
Those interested in forming a team because they have had a loved one, friend, or co-worker that has been affected by cancer, should attend. It is an opportunity to learn about several team events, “Paint the Town Purple,” luminaries, fund-raising, ask questions, and meet with the committee.
The theme for Relay 2018 is “Go Directly to Cure.” This year’s event theme plays off of the game “Monopoly.” There will be a game of monopoly being played at the captain’s meeting with the possibility of one team winning $100.
Amy Weakley from the Rome Memorial Hospital Radiation Oncology department will speak on prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer in support of colorectal cancer month.
Relay for Life events are held overnight at the track at the State School for the Deaf. Individuals and teams camp out at the track with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times.
Teams do most of their fund-raising prior to the event, but some teams also help creative fund-raisers at their camp sites at the event. Relay For Life brings together friends, families businesses, hospitals, school, and faith-based groups all aimed at furthering the efforts of the American Cancer Society.
