Outpatient surgery center eyes expansion on Griffiss Park
The outpatient surgery center in Griffiss business park plans to add two operating rooms.
Griffiss Surgery Center, 105 Dart Circle, proposes to outfit and equip 6,500 square feet of vacant space as two multispecialty ambulatory surgery operating rooms and associated support facilities.
The center initially focused on eye-related procedures, opening as the Griffiss Eye Surgery Center in 2012, and later expanded into other areas, including plastic and cosmetic, and gynecological surgeries.
In conjunction with the project, whose cost is estimated at about $2 million, incentives totaling $96,565 have been requested from the Oneida County Industrial Development Agency.
The center, operated by Griffiss EC, LLC, is seeking a sales tax break of $88,150 on furnishings and equipment bought for the project and a mortgage recording tax waiver estimated at $8,415, according to the application.
The additional operating rooms will boost employment at the center by the equivalent of 11 full-time jobs.
There currently are 30 full-time equivalent employees working at the facility.
No other same-day surgery center offers obstetrics-gynecological and plastic surgery
procedures locally, according to the application submitted to the IDA.
Rome Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo said she supported the project during the Nov. 17 IDA meeting.
A certificate of need has been requested from the state Department of Health, where it remains under review.
Griffiss Surgery Center was started as a partnership of several physicians and Rome Memorial Hospital.
The facility is part of the ongoing movement of services outside the traditional hospital setting.
Similarly, Apex Surgical Center, a multispecialty ambulatory surgery center off Route 233 in Westmoreland, opened in July 2015. It was started by a group of surgeons and the Oneida Healthcare Center.
