Green waste collection starts Monday in Rome
The Department of Public Works will begin collection of green waste and brush for the inside district on Monday, April 17, according to an announcement by city officials.
Crews will pick up green waste the day before regular rubbish day, the announcement said. For example, those who have their trash collected on Tuesday will have their green waste picked up on Monday.
This schedule will continue until the leaf collection schedule begins in October.
All green waste must be containerized. No loose piles of green waste will be collected.
Residetns may use either up to five 30-gallon containers or five 30-gallon 100 percent biodegradable lawn-and-leaf paper bags.
Only green waste will be collected; plastic bags will be left at the curb. Each container or bag shall weigh no more than 50 pounds.
No foreign matter such as paper, household garbage, stones, concrete, or animal feces should be co-mingled with green waste, the announcement added.
Brush and limbs should be no more than five feet in length with butt ends toward the road. Also, brush and limbs should be no larger than six inches in diameter.
All brush and limbs must be manageable by hand. Also there will be no shrub or root ball pick-up at the curb.
Homeowners can bring any green waste, as well as shrubs or root balls to the city yard, 132 Race St., during normal working hours — 8 a.m.-2 p.m. week days or 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays — beginning April 22.
Contractors are prohibited from placing green waste and brush at the curb; they are responsible for their own disposal.
