Get raking — leaf collection to start Nov. 13 in city
The City of Rome’s bulk leaf collection schedule will start Monday, Nov. 13, according to an announcement by the city’s Department of Public Works.
The weekly curbside green waste collection and brush chipper collection service will end Thursday, Nov. 9, the DPW added. Containerized leaves and brush piles placed at the curb after Thursday will be picked up by the bulk leaf collection crew.
Residents are instructued to rake leaves to the back side of the curb, not into the street, the DPW announcement said, as raking leaves into the street causes traffic problems, storm sewer backups and could cause injuries to children playing in the leaves, the city said in an announcement.
Leaves raked to the curb or in containers should not have stones or rubbish mixed in with them. Contractors are responsible for their own disposal, so leaves put at the curb by contractors will be left at the curb.
Containers that are acceptable to use are biodegradable paper lawn and leaf bags or clean trash cans. Do not use plastic garbage bags, cardboard boxes or the city-issued garbage and recycling containers.
Leaves raked to the curb will be collected in accordance green waste routes. Refer to the City of Rome’s website at romenewyork.com and in the Sentinel for updates as to when leaf collection crews will be moving on to another green waste route.
Leaves should be raked to the curb before the designated week of collection. Leaves raked to the curb will be collected during the designated week by a combination of leaf vacuum vehicles, front-end loaders and dump trucks, the DPW said.
In the event that collection crews are needed for snow plowing during this period the city will temporarily cease leaf collection and, when weather permits, will continue where crews had left off in the collection schedule, the announcement added. “After we have completed our first pass through the city, we will make a second pass,” DPW noted.
Those who do not want to wait for leaf collection may take their leaves in containers or bags to the City Yard Green Waste Transfer Station on Race Street. The hours of operation for disposal are 8 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays. There is no charge for Rome residents, though they must provide a valid driver’s license. Contractors cannot use this option.
