BRINGING LIGHT — Work on the former General Cable water tower off Harbor Way has begun. The city and the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce cooperatively obtained a state grant to put lighting on the tower. Originally planned to be ready in time for the bicentennial celebration of the Erie Canal in July, the work had to be delayed to obtain more funding. Now, it will be ready in time for Locktoberfest at Bellamy Harbor Park on Oct. 7. The tower’s lighting, which will be adjustable, will be on at all times. National Electrical Systems of Rome is doing the work. (Sentinel photo by John Clifford)
