Fort super to receive Medal of the Order of 1777
The Rome Historical Society will hold its annual dinner on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Delta Lake Inn.
A cocktail reception will be held in advance at 6 p.m. Tickets are $40, or $35 for trustees of the Historical Society.
At this year’s dinner, the society will award the Medal of the Order of 1777 to Frank Barrows, superintendent at Fort Stanwix National Monument.
This medal is the society’s highest award and is given annually the a person who “in conduct of life and effort, exemplifies the highest charter purposes of the society, the finest virtues of citizenship and the ever-reliant qualities of the true patriot.”
The recipient is “as worthy as the unconquered defenders of Fort Stanwix were in their time and circumstances,” the Rome Historical Society
Barrows came to Fort Stanwix in 2015 and has over 18 years of experience in the Nationa Parks Service.
He is also the project leader for the newly-established Harriet Tbman National Historical Park in Auburn.
In addition, the society will welcome New York state historian Devin Lander as keynote speaker.
Lander has served as executive director of the Museum Association of New York, and has worked with the state Assembly’s Tourism, Arts, Parks, and Sports Development Committee.
In his research, Lander has published work on the 1960s era Millbrook Commune in Dutchess County.
