Fort Stanwix National Monument will host a Flag Day observance at noon on Saturday in conjunction with Henry P. Smith Post American Legion.

The free event will include a presentation by a park ranger on the importance of the flag and its history at the fort. It will all cover aspects of flag etiquette and symbolism.

Today, volunteers spent the morning putting out about 3,500 flags on the 100 and 200 blocks of North James Street, Gansevoort and Veterans Memorial Parks and the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier.

The holiday celebrated on June 14 commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental
Congress.
