Construction on Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Griffiss underway
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is being built at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park on a site donated by the Griffiss Local Development Corp.
Dan Bunal is volunteering services and equipment to perform the site work, according to Rick Falcone of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
“Our plan is to complete the park by the end of this fall except for placing the memorial stone and statue,” Falcone said.
The plan is to have a dedication at the park on Memorial Day 2019.
The memorial will have a permanent plaque in honor of the 12 Romans who were killed in Vietnam, said Falcone. There will also be a permanent plaque at the site acknowledging those who have donated $250 or more to the park’s construction.
After bringing the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall to Rome in 1997 “and seeing the impact it made on our community, a dream began,” said Falcone.
A permanent memorial would be built in Rome to honor all Vietnam veterans in Rome. Fundraising has been ongoing ever since.
The effort is about $8,500 short of the amount needed to complete the park, Falcone said. So far, about $35,000 has been raised.
Donations can be sent to Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Inc., 210 Elm St., Rome NY 13440.
There will also be a fundraising dinner 1-5 p.m. on Sept. 15 at Nicole’s Restaurant in Camden. The local Walmart distribution center has donated a 55-inch television to be raffled. Also donated is a KitchenAid barbecue grill from Home Depot in New Hartford, which will also be raffled. There will be a 50-50 raffle, door prizes and entertainment. Tickets can be purchased at Victory Motors or by calling Falcone at 315-225-4438. Tickets are available for a $25 donation.
