Church to host ‘Unity’ events

“Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Version 2.0” is the anniversary presentation in a series of “Unity in the Community” events hosted by the First Presbyterian Church of Rome.

The public is welcome to attend one or both segments of this environmental program, Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Saturday, Jan. 20.

The Rev. Sam Pendergrast, pastor at First Presbyterian Rome, said, “Our November Unity Day gathering that focused on Earth Care received such great community response that we decided to continue the effort.”

“We believe as people of faith, the Earth belongs to God and it is our responsibility to care for it and all its creatures, to respect our home and our neighbors as gifts from God,” Pendergrast added.

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the church parlor, the environmental documentary from National Geographic and Academy Award-winning activist Leonardo DiCaprio, “Before the Flood,” will be shown.

The 90-minute film emphasizes stewardship of the planet and shows the worldwide atrocities due to climate change.

At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, in the downstairs dining hall, the program features Liz Byron from the Citizens Climate Lobby, an advocacy and local organizing group who push for policy changes and education. Its website is

Representatives from Rome Clean and Green will also be on hand on Jan. 20. A vegetarian
potluck lunch follows. Guests should reel free to bring a dish to share, according to the event organizers.

Pendergrast said, “We believe that protecting the earth is an ethical duty and that our spiritual growth includes recognizing our role as stewards of creation. We have a moral responsibility to care for those who are most vulnerable to the dangerous effects of climate change.”
