Chamber music concert April 21 at First Presbyterian Church
Alliance Classical Players, a locally-based chamber music ensemble, will present a free concert of music for winds and piano at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, at the First Presbyterian Church, 108 W. Court St..
The program features two pieces for quintets of varying instrumentation. The first is the “Quintet for Piano and Winds,” by Mozart, written for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn and piano.
The quintet premiered on April 1, 1784 in Vienna and shortly afterward, Mozart wrote to his father saying, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.”
The second quintet is “Suite No. 1 for Wind Quintet,” by French composer Charles LeFebvre. Composed in 1884, the work showcases the instruments of the standard woodwind quintet. Two other short pieces round out the concert — a Celtic-inspired “Ballad” by Henry Cowell, and “May the Heavens Declare” by Benedetto Marcello.
Performing in the concert are Rome natives Gregory Unangst on piano and Colleen O’Neil on clarinet, along with Judy Marchione of Cassville, bassoon; Janelle Bookhout, oboe; Claire McKenney, French horn; and Cornelia Brewster, flute. All are frequent performers and founding members of Alliance Classical Players.
The core ensemble of Alliance Classical Players is a traditional wind octet.
The group has performed together since 2014, presenting chamber music concerts of high artistic quality in Rome. Alliance performs frequently at Rome Art and Community Center, and makes a priority of performing listener-friendly classical chamber music in an inviting local setting.
All of the musicians of Alliance are professionally trained and work frequently as freelance musicians with numerous regional ensembles.
