Bartlett Baptist marks 200 years, pastor’s retirement
On Sunday, June 24, at 2 p.m. Bartlett Baptist Church will celebrate its 200th year of serving God.
The day will also mark the retirement of the Rev. Doctor Tom Hast who has served as pastor of the church for nearly 20 years. The public is invited to come and celebrate, reflect, and fellowship. Refreshments will follow. Bartlett Baptist continues to worship in its original building at 5639 Bartlett Road.
The building was constructed in 1820. Over the years it has been picked up, turned, and added to, thereby meeting the needs of the congregation and its community, church officials said. “It continues to hold the charm and closeness of a dynamic country church.”
“Bartlett Baptist Church seeks to follow God by helping the greater community. It reaches out to its neighbors, irregardless of the church affiliation, in times of trouble. It has been instrumental in conducting ecumenical services and vacation bible school with other greater Westmoreland churches.”
The church supports the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the Country Pantry food pantry.
After careers as a Naval Officer and an engineer, Rev. Hast was “called by God to attend seminary” and then to shepherd Bartlett Baptist. He has been active in Rome Clergy Association and was serving as its president when 9/11 occurred. With the church’s blessing and support, he has deployed with the American Red Cross and on a mission trip, built houses in Hattie. He has also served as an Area Minister for American Baptist Churches of New York State. He presently serves on the board of Empowered Pathways and is the past board chair of the Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency.
For the past five years Rev. Dr. Hast has also been the pastor of the Oneida Baptist Church.
An anniversary book has been published. It contains the history of the church, family recipes, and reflections of past and present members. Copies are available for a donation.
