The United Way: Helping others
There’s a group of individuals in Rome who each year determine who gets what in the annual United Way of Rome and Western Oneida County fund-raising campaign.
It could be argued that as a group they are among the most influential people in the region. There are numerous needs and never enough money to go around.
Now, this group is looking for more volunteers.
The group is known as the community investment team. Each team volunteer reviews 21 online applications from programs that are requesting a share of the UW’s campaign that so far has raised some $174,369 in pledges, 94 percent of the goal. Executive Director Alice Dearo notes that the campaign is not closed yet because some groups haven’t notified the UW of their totals.
Agencies will present their program in person to the team on March 3. Presentations will be scored, and there will be discussions. Finally decisions will be made.
It’s an important job because these team members will decide which health and human services programs will receive funding.
