It takes equipment and training
Great training and great equipment. It’s an unbeatable combination.
Last week local fire departments put these components to the test when they rescued a dog stranded in the middle of icy, fast-moving Oneida Creek in Vernon.
Colby the dog fell in the creek and either swam or was swept to a small island. The wet and scared pooch needed help.
To the rescue came firefighters from Sherrill-Kenwood, Sylvan Beach and Oneida Castle.
Sherrill firefighters Stephen Davis and Wyatt Hasty donned the department’s cold water rescue suits and were able to make it to the dog. They were assisted by Beach firefighter Jeff Kobler, and together with harness and rescue ropes and firefighters on shore were able to rescue Colby. Oneida Castle stood by in case someone fell into the creek and was swept downstream.
We can be proud of the collaboration of all concerned, using their training and special equipment to assure a happy ending to what was a very dangerous situation.
