Walter I. Pelon, Sr.
Walter I. Pelon, Sr., 84, retired Rome Firefighter, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 15, 2018 peacefully in his home.
He was born on June 21, 1933 in Bernhards Bay; a son of the late, Irving and Wilhelmina “Ruth” Herzog Pelon and was educated locally. Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. On September 3, 1955 in St. Vincent de Paul Church, Syracuse, he was united in marriage to the former Harriet Smith; a blessed union of 40 years until her passing on December 29, 1995. Walter retired from the Rome Fire Department in 1986 after many years dedicated service.
Walter was a life member and very active member of the Stanwix Veterans and Men’s Club and was also a member of the Henry P. Smith Post #24 American Legion. He enjoyed being outdoors especially fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling. Walter was a true handyman who could accomplish any carpentry, plumbing, or electrical jobs.
He is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Leah and Larry Sweeney of Mechanicsville, Lynne Pycior of Rome, and Donna Semit of Remsen; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Louise Pelon, Jr. of SC; 10 cherished grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Mona and Dennis Olejniuk of Lee Center; in-laws, William and Joanne Smith, Laura “Tootsie” McKenna, Joseph “Frank” Smith, and Kathy and Martin Norton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Walter is preceded in death by a sister, Millie Mosca and a son-in-law, William Semit.
Mr. Pelon’s funeral service with military honors, will be held on Monday at 6 p.m. at the Gulla Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 209 N. Washington St., Rome (336-5700). Spring interment will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Churchville.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
