Robert Arthur Garofalo was stricken and passed away on January 6, 2017.

This leaves a gaping hole in the hearts of his family and friends. Son of Mary and Arthur Garofalo, Bob was raised and educated In Rome and got his teaching degrees at Brockport and Potsdam Colleges.

After graduation in 1972, Bob married Charlotte Jones in 1973. She was the sun in his solar system. He taught in Gouverneur, NY for over 30 years after which he served as athletic director.

An active participant in the Gouverneur community, he served as president of the Gouverneur Teachers’ Association, as a member of the Federal Credit Union Board, was a Trustee of the Village Board and served on the board of the Gouverneur Golf and Country Club. He was volunteer cook at the town Senior Lunch Program and served on the St. James Parish Council, was a member of the Kiwanis Club and a member of The Cosmopolitan Dance Club. Having recently moved to Syracuse, he was currently volunteering at the Newland Center as a Literacy Volunteer.

Besides Charlotte, Bob will be survived by his loving, proud son Nicholas, Nick’s wife Kim and two grandchildren, Oliver and Miles who he referred to as his ” little nuggets.” He is also leaving behind a sister, Patricia Gehman and husband Gene, a brother Richard and his special friend Stephen, aunts, uncles and cousins. Those, along with his innumerable friends, were his planets and stars.

He was a kitchen master, golf lover and a Giant’s fan. If you were lucky enough to have known him, you knew the grumpy persona that poorly hid the heart and humor of a truly wonderful man. His candle has gone out but his light will always shine.

The Newland Center, 1443 E. Genesee St., Syr. 13210 would benefit from any generosity you may feel. Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 on Friday at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur, NY and Saturday 11-noon.
