Reverend Charles “Chuck” Rudd, Master of Divinity, 84, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2017 at the Abraham House in Utica surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 16, 1932 in Rome the son of the late C. Oliver and Jennie Abbe Rudd and attended Rome Free Academy before receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Syracuse University and his Master of Divinity at Drew University in 1955. That same year he married Elsie May “Ellie” Agnew in a ceremony on the lawn of Drew University that began a 62 year marriage that thrived for all of those six decades.

Reverend “Chuck” was a pastor of and for the people of Upstate New York. He never aspired to being the Minister of a large city church but was committed to being pastor and sounding board for the farmers, workers and families in upstate New York. He started out at a small parish in Madrid, NY which still had its outhouse in the back yard followed by appointments in Parish and Hamilton as well as his longest tenures at the Delta United Methodist Church. His three children attended the local public school and the Church of Christ United in Richfield Springs from where two of his children graduated from Richfield Springs Central School and his son, Stephen, graduated from Rome Free Academy, like his father. Next came appointments in Whitesboro and it was in Vernon and Lairdsville, NY that Chuck “retired” from the formal ministry and became Pastor Emeritus which was celebrated by his friends and family at a memorable “Chuck Roast” at the Vernon United Methodist church. He was a very involved supporter and volunteer of Camp Aldersgate-Methodist Camp in Greig. Chuck loved the outdoors particularly while fishing, camping, and watching wildlife, especially birds.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elsie; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Richard Hilts of Mohawk; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Teresa Rudd of RI; two grandchildren, Mary and Charley Rudd; two nieces; two nephews; and several cousins.

Charles was preceded in death by a son J. Stephen Rudd; a sister, Marion “Julie” Kerstetter; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fletcher and May Agnew.

Rev. Rudd’s memorial service will be held on Friday July 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow at the Delta United Methodist Church with all welcome to attend. Private interment will be in Rome Cemetery.
