Neil Francis Wightman

Neil F. Wightman, age 87, died peacefully on September 8, 2017 in the Residential Healthcare Facility at the Rome Memorial Hospital, Rome, New York.

Born January 5, 1930 in Rome the son of Howard and Eva Drexel Wightman, Neil graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1947 and served in the US Navy until 1951. He worked as a systems analyst at Rome Cable for 35 years. After retirement, he worked for 20 years as a groundskeeper at Evergreen Cemetery, a job he truly enjoyed.

Neil was a great outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and of course golf. He was a family man with a generous spirit who was much loved by everyone.

A well-rounded man, Neil was a member of Baron-Steuben Lodge #264 F. & A.M. for most of his life and had many friends at the Lee Center American Legion post. For many years he served as an usher at Zion Episcopal Church. His family and friends will always remember him as a generous, friendly, and caring person.

Neil is survived by his wife Marlene; daughter Lauren (Bernard) Owens; son Eric (Patricia) of Seattle, Washington; stepdaughter Linda (Steve) Spellicy of Sugar Land, Texas; brother Bruce (Betty); along with grandchildren Farrah McMahon (Chris), Kim Owens, Jason Owens; and five great-grandchildren Landen, Fiona, Isibeal, Peyton, and Parker. He is preceded by his first wife Marilyn DeVisser Wightman.

A funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc., 210 W. Court Street, Rome. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Home for Funerals Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions in memory of Neil may be made to the Humane Society of Rome, Inc., P.O. Box 4572, Rome, NY 13442-4572.
