Nancy S. Richard
Nancy S. Richard, age 84, of Rome, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2018, with her loving family at her side.
She was born December 1, 1933, in Philadelphia, PA, a daughter of the late Harold B. and E. Ruth Wells Schuchert. Nancy was united in marriage to C. Daniel Richard, Jr., on June 27, 1953, in Schwenksville, PA; he died July 9, 1996. Nancy was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
Nancy lived her life in faith and service to her God, her family and her community with a strong emphasis on working for justice. She served her church through her local congregation as a deacon, through the Upstate NY Synod of the ELCA on the Global Mission Team and other committees. Nan was on the church-wide board of the Women of the ELCA from 1990-1996. She was also a leader in the Upstate NY Synod Women of the ELCA, educating others about issues of peace and justice. Up until the time of her death, Nancy was part of an anti-racism team, planning and leading workshops. Nancy was one of the founders of the Resource Center for Independent Living in Utica NY and was a board member for many years. In 1986, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority of Rome, NY named Nancy Woman of the Year and in 2014 The Upstate NY Synod of the ELCA presented her with a Discipleship Award. Upon receiving the Discipleship award, Nancy said it all when she stated, “It’s not about what I have given, but what I have received.”
Nancy is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Terry Lynn and Rick Littlefield of Barrington, NH, Sandra Lee and Ronald Rice of Dayton, OH, and Pamela Sue and Scott Donovan of Whitesboro, NY; two sons and daughters-in-law, Karl M. and Leslie Richard of Springfield, PA, and Phillip D. and Donna Richard of Pottstown, PA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul B. and Ruth Schuchert of Warminster, PA, and Bruce L. and Lenora Schuchert of Phoenix, NY; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth A. Schuchert.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 11 a.m., at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Verona.
Relatives and friends may call at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Saturday September 29, 2018, from 9 to 11 a.m., prior to the funeral service.
