Mary Eileen Mitchell
Mary Eileen Mitchell, 94, of Rome, passed to God peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at Rome Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient since July 20, 2017.
Eileen was born May 30, 1923, to Herman W. and Mary Connell Mitchell. She graduated from St. Alousius Academy in 1940. She worked at General Cable and Rome Manafacturing for twenty years before deciding to study nursing at Utica State Hospital where she graduated in 1960. She then went on to work at Rome Memorial Hospital for twenty-five years, retiring in 1985.
She was a cradle to the grave member of St. Peter’s Church, was proudly a Eucharistic Minister and belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society and the Senior Group.
Surviving are a niece, Patricia Roehm, of Rome; a nephew, John (Nora) Mitchell, of Tucson, AZ; a niece-in-law, Lisa Mitchell, of Terryville, CT; great-nieces, June (Charles) Selover, of NH, and Joann (James) Lee, Jr., of Rome; a great-nephew-in-law, James Carletta, II, of Las Vegas; numerous other great-nieces, great-nephews, great great-nieces, and great great-nephews; her beloved and closest friend, the late Hermine Harlander, and her family, whom Eileen thought of as a her second family; Bob, Mary Lou, Jim, David, Bernie, Susie, and Betsy Wood, and Kathy, Ann, Chris, and Kevin O’Connor; two boys whom she will never forget, her best friends, Jason and Kyle; and her cousin, Margaret Mitchell and her daughter, Kelly, of Nepean, Ontario, Canada. Eileen is predeceased by her only sister, Joann, with whom she was resided with; a brother and sister-in-law, John H. and Jeanne Mitchell; a nephew, James Mitchell; a great-niece, Eileen Carletta; a cousin, Stuart Mitchell; and Delores O’Connor.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street, Rome, and a Mass of the Christian Burial at 12:00 p.m. St. Peter’s Church where the Rev. Philip A. Hearn will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home prior to the service 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
