James Joseph Carrig

James Joseph Carrig, 88, of Rome passed away peacefully on Friday, October 5. He was born February 22, 1930 in Little Falls, the middle child of Timothy and Marie Grau Carrig.

James attended St. Mary’s Academy in Little Falls, being the salutatorian of his class of 1947. He later received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in English from Niagara University, and a doctor of education degree in adult education from Syracuse University. James was an Army veteran, and proud employee of Utica College where he worked for 40 years first as a member of the English department, and ultimately retiring as the Dean of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.

On August 19, 1961 James was united in marriage to Mary Chubbuck, a tenured teacher at New Hartford Central School, a union which lasted until her death in 2016. James was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Rome, and a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Aside from spending time with his family, James enjoyed following the New York Yankees and Syracuse basketball teams. He is survived by a son Tim Carrig and his wife Jane of Erie, CO; a daughter Kasey Dingman and her husband John of New Hartford, and Jim Carrig and his wife Suzanne of San Jose, CA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Josh Cockroft, a medical student at Vanderbilt University, by two granddaughters Mara and Carrie Dingman of New Hartford, a granddaughter and grandson Emma and Aidan Carrig of San Jose, CA; a brother, Leo Carrig of Little Falls; a sister Marie Matus and her husband, Frank of Little Falls; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, October 11th from 4-7 p.m. at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. Philip Hearn officiating. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
