Gunter Kiepert

Gunter Emil Otto Kiepert, 82, of Rome, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 in Rome Memorial Hospital. 

He was born on December 15, 1934 in Essen, Germany; the only child of the late Otto and Bertha Pudschun Kiepert. Gunter was raised and educated in Germany and Prussia. He came to Rome in 1955 where he received his high school equivalency diploma which was very important to him. On August 6, 1956 in Trinity United Church of Christ, Gunter was united in marriage to the former Elsa Nittka. He retired 1996 as head of the electrical department at Rome Strip Steel after 41 years of dedicated employment. 

Gunter and Elsa loved traveling throughout their life together. The would travel anywhere on the east coast from Maine to Florida, especially Sanibel Island, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, New Orleans, or anywhere else their interests would take them. In addition to traveling, Gunter also enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, and bowling. He adored time spent participating in all activities and events with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. 

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elsa; daughter and son-in-law, Melody and Michael Milewski of Rome; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Martha Kiepert of OK; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kelly and Chris Carinci and their children, Conner, Avery, Allidy, and Christopher, Christine Rudd and her children, Rhiannon, Hunter, and Jack, and Michelle and Felix Colosimo and their twins, Cooper and Madelyn; and step-grandchildren, Shonna and John Cook, Michelle and Jason Decharo and their children, Emily and Nicolina, Christopher Milewski and his son, C.J., and Andrew Milewski; and travel companions and good friends, Ray and Diane Vollmer. 

Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Gunter’s life on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, 215 W. Court St., Rome. 

Flowers can be sent to the church or in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity United Church of Christ.
