Geraldine C. Plehn 1921 – 2017

UTICA – Geraldine C. Plehn, age 95, passed away April 17, 2017, at home after a period of declining health.

She was born June 22, 1921, in North Rose, NY, the only daughter of R. Hayes and Frances G. Catchpole. A graduate of Leavenworth Central High School, Wolcott, NY, Geraldine graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the Conservatory of Music, Oberlin College. She completed a six week course of study in Clothing Construction including draping and design at the Traphegan School of Fashion, New York City and studied sculpting at the Munson Williams Proctor Art School. Geraldine married her beloved husband, James G. Plehn, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska on November 6, 1943, in Dallas, Texas. Together they had five children, two daughters and three sons. They raised their children in Westmoreland, NY where she was an active volunteer in the schools, and director of their church choir. Geraldine also helped care for her mother-in-law who lived with the family. After raising her children, she returned to her career in music, working as a Music Therapist at the Presbyterian Home, where she found great fulfillment in bringing the joy of listening to and creating music to the residents.

Geraldine was an accomplished needle worker, designing and sewing many dresses for family and friends, including her two granddaughters’ wedding dresses. She created original crewel work designs and sculpted in clay and wood. Geraldine was a long time member of the Skenandoa Club, playing in the women’s nine and eighteen hole leagues and an avid bridge player. She was an active volunteer throughout her life, in recent years at Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. Geraldine also served on the Altar Guild and was a long-time member of the choir at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. She was a past president of the Catholic Women’s Club. Geraldine was a loving wife and friend. A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she enjoyed family gatherings and regular visits with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by five children, Victoria Gaw, (Vernon), Sterling, MA, Rebecca Matteson, S. Glens Falls, NY, Stephen Plehn, Hinckley, NY, Michael Plehn (Rosemary), New York Mills, NY and Richard Plehn, Wolfeboro, NH; four grandchildren, Kenneth Gaw, Catherine VanPraagh (Andrew), Laura Williams (Greg), all of Massachusetts and Thomas Plehn (Shannon), Florida, as well as three great-grandchildren, Abigail and Julian VanPraagh and Cameron Williams.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, 2222 Genesee St., Utica. The family will receive guests at the Seton Center immediately following. Interment will follow at Westmoreland Union Cemetery, Stone Rd., Westmoreland.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to her loving caregivers who, for the past year, have made it possible for her to remain in her own home as she wished.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Geraldine’s name may be made to the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund or Hospice & Palliate Care, Inc. Envelopes will available at the Mass.
