City cleanup on Saturday
Rome will use its city yard on Mill Street as the south Rome site for Saturday’s Great American Cleanup, run by the Genesis Group’s Keep Mohawk Valley Beautiful Committee and Rome Clean and Green.
The city’s Public Works crews will man four sites with containers from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday: Guyer Field, City Hall, the North Madison Street Parks Department garage and city yard.
Romans can bring bulk items and e-waste to the sites, but must provide identification, as the service is only open to city residents. To make an appointment for e-waste collection, call the city yard at 339-7774 or 339-7778.
The city will also accept rigid plastics dropped off at the four collection points or at the city yard Saturday. The items will then be taken to Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority. Bulky rigid plastic items cannot be put out for curbside recycling or in regular garbage containers in Rome. These things include clean plastic drums, totes and empty garbage cans, clean buckets/pails, plastic toys (i.e. playhouses), plastic lawn furniture and coolers, plastic pallets and shelving, plastic laundry baskets and plastic recycling bins and carts.
Representatives from Bliss Environmental Services will also be at City Hall to discuss the rules for garbage and recycling in Rome, with literature and bin stickers available there.
To volunteer, either call 794-5384 or show up at City Hall at 8 a.m. Saturday for equipment and a location assignment.
Those who clean up an area on their own can call the city yard to schedule collection of bags.
