Julie Grow Denton has been named the 2013 Smart Woman by the Rome Hospital Foundation.

The Smart Woman Award is presented annually at the Foundation’s Fashion Show, which this year will be presented by Mohawk Valley Women’s Health Associates on Friday, May 3, at the Beeches.

The award is given to "someone who shines inside and out — a woman who displays excellent character and who acts and speaks with kindness, grace and elegance and a woman that gives of herself to the community." The honoree is selected from a pool of candidates nominated by community members. Past recipients of the award include Gretchen Sprock, Mary Carmel Wolf, Mary Davis, Maureen Nash and Sally Hinman.

Julie Grow Denton serves on the Boards of the following local organizations: Rome Memorial Hospital (assistant treasurer); Mohawk Valley EDGE; MVCC Foundation; Rome Industrial Development Corp. (president); Rome Community Foundation (secretary); Legal Services of CNY; and Rome Bar Association (secretary). She has previously served as a president of the Jervis Public Library Association, the Mid York Library System and the Oneida County Bar Association. She is an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as a youth group advisor. She also serves on the Fifth Judicial District Committee on Character and Fitness, as well as the Fifth Judicial District Grievance Committee.

According to her nominator, "Julie is the type of woman you want for a friend, your neighbor, your child’s church school advisor or your advocate. She is sincere and kind. Julie works to improve the vibrancy and quality of life in Rome by supporting its spiritual, ethical, educational and commercial growth. She does this with great focus, vision, stamina and humor."

Denton was valedictorian of the Rome Free Academy Class of 1987 and received her bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University, graduating magna cum laude. She graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School and is a partner at McMahon and Grow in Rome. She is married to Robert Denton Jr., and is the mother to a daughter, Evelyn, 7, and a son, Jonathan, 10.

Admission for the event this year of $45, a savings of $10 over previous years. Tables of 10 can be reserved for $400. Proceeds are used to support Women’s Health Services at Rome Memorial Hospital.

The Fashion Show will be the first of four signature events Rome Hospital Foundation will hold in 2013, followed by the Annual Golf Classic, June 24 at Teugega Country Club; the Brew Ha Ha, Sept. 21 at Woods Valley; and Annual Gala, Nov. 16 at Turning Stone Resort. Event proceeds from all Foundation events support of the mission of Rome Memorial Hospital.
