The Rome Catholic School Jazz Ensemble will celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with a concert Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Rome Art & Community Center’s ArtHouse Cafe.
The concert features special guests John Piazza, on trumpet, and Joe Ferlo, on guitar. Both are professional jazz musicians with national reputations and ties to central New York. They will work with the students in an afternoon rehearsal/clinic at the school on Wednesday and performing with the band on Thursday.
The RCS Jazz Ensemble is a 10-piece group comprised of students from fifth-grade through tenth-grade. The group formed two years ago to study and perform jazz and other popular music styles. The ensemble performs on regular school concerts throughout the year and in the community as well.
The concert is free, and the public is welcome. Familiar tunes such as "My Romance," "Tangerine," "On Broadway," and "Sweet Home Chicago," among others, are slated for the program, plus some original combo-style selections.
Students in the group include:
¿ Joe Cesena and Nick Wilson, on saxophone;
¿ Sean Mills, clarinet;
¿ Sofia Gardinier, flute;
¿ Daisha Melendez and Chase Coluccio, trumpet.
¿ Tejas Desai, trombone;
¿ Kenny Talarico, piano;
¿ Jakob Talbot, keyboard bass; and
¿ Elizabeth Hahn. drums.
Local bassist Chris Davis will also sit in with the group at the show. The RCS Jazz Combo is directed by music teacher Colleen O’Neil.
"April is designated as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM)," O’Neil said. "The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History established JAM in 2002, to draw greater public attention to the extraordinary history of jazz and its importance as an American cultural heritage. In addition, JAM is intended to stimulate the current jazz scene and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz-to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and support institutional jazz programs. We are excited to perform with John Piazza and Joe Ferlo at the ArtHouse Café, a wonderful and welcoming venue for jazz in Rome."
