Rev. Msgr. Matthew Luczycki
JAMESVILLE — Rev. Msgr. Matthew Luczycki, 92, Senior Priest in residence of St. Joseph Church in Oneida for the past 23 years, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, in Crouse Hospital, Syracuse. He was born May 17, 1920, in Binghamton, the Son of John & Josephine Kot Luczycki. He received His early education in Binghamton. He graduated from Johnson City High School in June of 1938.
He attended St. Mary’s in Orchard Lake, and St. Bernard’s Seminary. He was ordained December 22, 1945 in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse, by the Late Bishop Walter A. Forey. He served as associate pastor at St. Stanislaus. Utica; Transfiguration in Rome; Sacred Heart in Syracuse; Holy Trinity in Utica; and Pastor of St. Joseph Church in Oriskany Falls; & Pastor of Transfiguration Church, in Rome. He also served as Pastor of St. Agnes in Vernon Center. He served on the Ecumenical Commission, the Priest’s Senate, the Board of advisors & as chairperson on the Diocesan Personnel board. A high light of His life was celebrating Mass with Pope John Paul 11, in the Pope’s private Chapel in Rome. He also served as Chaplain of the Madison Jail in Wampsville.
He enjoyed Golf and a good Pitch game. For 40 years, He enjoyed His camp on Oneida Lake for it’s beauty and serenity. He enjoyed traveling as a Cruise ship chaplain, especially His trips to the Holy Land and had a love for photography.
Surviving are His nieces Dorothy & Bill Short, of Sarasota, Fla; Barbara & Bob Martin, of Vestal, N.Y. a nephew, Jim & Jean Lucey, of Boston, Ma; & several great nieces & nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 A.M. from St. Joseph Church, Oneida, with Bishop Robert Cunningham, officiating. Interment will be made in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Binghamton. Calling hours will be held Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Church, where Father’s body will in State. The Ritual for a deceased Priest will be held Thursday evening at 7:00 P.M. with Rev. Phillip Hearn, Vicar will be recited.
