City Democrats seek candidates

The Rome Democratic Committee is seeking candidates for local offices, including the Common Council, where all seven seats are up for election and only two are occupied by Democrats.

The committee held its monthly meeting on Tuesday. The group added 22 new members who were screened from December through January and approved by the Oneida County Board of Elections and the Oneida County Democratic Committee.

The committee is seeking registered Democrats who would like to run in this year’s elections. Democrats who are interested and want to be screened can contact City Chair Barbara Calandra at 336-7748 or Vice Chair Betty Havens at 337-2960 for an appointment. All of the seats on the county Board of Legislators will be up for election in the fall, but how the Legislature will be carved up has yet to be finalized. Once complete, the redistricting will result in a reduction from 29 to 23 legislators.

The committee is also seeking new members. Those who would like to be screened for membership should contact Calandra or Havens.

The committee will hold its annual fund raiser — The Jefferson Dinner — on Saturday, May 18. The guests of honor and speakers will be announced soon, along with details on ticket sales.

The committee also started a Facebook page where events and information can be found — www.facebook.com/RomeNYDemocraticCommittee.
