Woods Valley holding snowmobile event

WESTERNVILLE — The Woods Valley Ski Area will be hosting a Snowmobile Hill Climb Racing Association event on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Registration is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. with a cost of $20 for trail riders and youths, $30 for professionals and $10 for a test pass. Classes for trail riders and youths are also available for $15 with youngsters 12 years old and under free of charge.

Racing begins at 5 p.m. No carry in alcohol or glass bottles are allowed at SHCRA events.

Rome native’s horse wins again in Florida

Rome native and harness racing horse owner Thomas Witt’s pacer Special Strides picked up its third win at the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park in Pompano Park, Fla., on Saturday.

Special Strides, which is co-owned by Witt and Vernon Downs driver-trainer Rick Plano of Sherrill, dashed to 1:51.3 finishing result on the 1-mile oval to capture the $13,200 Open event. With Plano doing the steering, the pacer beat out the runner-up Monet CC as well as Amillionpennies in third place en route to the victory.

It is Special Strides’ third win at Pompano Park in the past two months. The other triumphs came when he dashed to a lifetime-best time of 1:51.2 on Nov. 17 in a $5,500 event and the other in 1:51.4 on Nov. 24 during a $7,500 race.
