Nurse accused of stealing painkiller

A nurse who worked at Rome Memorial Hospital is accused of improperly taking the drug Demerol from the facility.

Allison Axe, 35, of 14 Harmon Road, Glenville of Schenectady County, was released on her own recognizance by City Court Judge Daniel C. Wilson Wednesday on charges of first-degree falsifying business records and using fraud to obtain a controlled substance. Her case was adjourned to
Aug. 15.

Authorities said on June 18 and 19, Axe, a registered nurse at Rome Memorial Hospital, falsified information on patient medical administration records so that she could withdraw drugs from the automated medication dispensing unit. Authorities said Axe stole a quantity of the drug Demerol.

In a statement to investigators, the patient said Axe never gave him any Demerol. In her own statement, Axe said she simply never scanned the patient’s individual bar code when administering the medication because she was "frustrated" with the hospital’s bar code system and was pressed for time.
