Blacksmithing class at historic site

LITTLE FALLS — A beginners blacksmithing workshop is being held at the Herkimer Home State Historic Site, 200 State Route 169, Little Falls, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The fee is $75 and registration and prepayment are required by calling the Herkimer Home at 823-0398.

Instructor Tom Metouten will reproduce examples of early iron work using traditional methods and technologies from hand blown charcoal fires.

The workshop will include an overview of blacksmithing history, tools, technique, and core skills of blacksmithing. Each participant will forge practical and decorative items from hot steel to take home.

Tools and safety equipment are provided, though students may bring their own safety glasses and apron. Long sleeves, long pants and hard shoes or boots must be worn. Participants should bring a sack lunch. Water and a snack will be provided.
