New recruits for militia at Fort Stanwix National Monument

RECRUITS ON A SORTIE — Left, 45 newly enlisted soldiers cross the fort bridge as they participate in a raid of British Indian allies and Loyalist troop camps. The children are participating in a celebration of Marinus Willett’s forces, who on the afternoon of Aug. 6, 1777, were supposed to provide support to General Nicholas Herkimer’s army. However, unbeknownst to Willett, Herkimer’s forces had already been ambushed. Instead, Willett raided the empty British camps and stole valuable supplies from them. The flags, above right, under an early draft of the American flag, are British flags stolen by Willett. (Sentinel photos by John Clifford)
