The Rome Men’s Softball Association officially started its postseason on Thursday with eight teams competing in a single-elimination play-in tournament.

All teams not placing in the top four spots in their league participate in this tournament on their respective nights for an opportunity to compete in the 16-team city-wide championship tournament that is held on the first weekend in August.

Bill Herrig’s Auto and Oriskany Manufacturing Technologies played in the final game to determine the tournament winner.

OMT had earlier beaten tournament favorite, Korp’s Corner, 13-8 to make it to the final showdown. Bill Herrig’s route to the final game included victories over Lifted and M. LaGasse & Sons. Bill Herrig’s Auto and OMT began the final showdown on the near field at 9:30. Herrig’s took a 2-0 lead after two innings, only to see the lead disappear when Brandon Tracy, Brad Glerup and Jeff Brown each scored runs for OMT in the top of the third. Herrig’s would hold OMT to those three runs, though, and batted around in the sixth inning to secure the 13-3 victory and a spot in the city tournament. James Madera batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Bill Herrig’s Auto and finished 9-for-12 on the night. Tim Hudson batted 9-for-13 for Herrig’s in their three wins and scored six runs.

A similar tournament will be held Sunday night, with games starting at 5:45, to determine the play-in team from that league. Two wild-card spots will also be selected to make up the 16-team slate participating on the championship tournament on Aug. 2, 4 and 5.
