West Nile virus detected
but not in Oneida County

NEW HAVEN -- West Nile virus has been found in mosquitoes in samples collected in this Oswego County town. There are no known human cases of West Nile virus in Oswego County. No mosquito samples collected this summer in Oneida County have shown evidence of West Nile virus or Eastern equine encephalitis.

Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang said Tuesday the mosquitoes were collected July 17 and submitted to the state Health Department for testing of mosquito-borne viruses. The county was notified Tuesday that the sample tested positive for West Nile virus.

Earlier this month West Nile virus was detected in mosquitoes collected in the Central Square area.

Like in Oneida County, the Oswego County Health Department collects mosquitoes from several sites around the county to monitor for mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. There has been no evidence of Eastern equine encephalitis detected in Oswego County at this time.
