Bath salts ban leads to arrest

A Utica man is facing charges for possessing "bath salts" now that the city has passed an ordinance banning synthetic drugs.

The ban, enacted on July 11, came after weeks of bath salts-related medical emergencies.

Police said Benjamin Silva, 30, of Baker Avenue, shoved his wife during a domestic dispute on July 9, despite having an order of protection filed against him. Following an investigation, police said Silva was taken into custody on outstanding arrest warrants on Wednesday.

Police said Silva was found in possession of marijuana and a small glass jar containing bath salts.

Silva is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and the new ordinance, possession of synthetic drugs, police stated. Silva is also charged with first-degree contempt and second-degree harassment for the domestic incident. He is scheduled to appear in City Court on all charges.
