Monster second half propels Westernville club to victory

WESTERNVILLE — The Westernville Independence broke away from a scoreless first half to claim a 5-1 triumph over the Busters at the Town of Westernville Park during Central New York State Women’s Soccer League action on Wednesday.

Westernville picked up the first goal less than two minutes into the second half off a goal by Courtney Zavaro on an assist by Daria Orekhov before the Busters’ Brittany Decker tied the score back up off a pass from Karla Heinrich.

Samantha George went on to score two goals and put the Independence ahead for the second time, 2-1, and for good on Samantha Kogut’s helper. Orekhov also scored a goal to go along with her assist as Courtney Wheeler assisted. Kogut finished with two assists, and Kaitlin Fahey added one helper.

Goalkeeper Rebekah Geller made five saves in net, while the Busters’ Rachel Noone grabbed eight saves.

The Independence’s record goes to 2-3 on the season. Westernville will host the Herkimer Booters on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
