Robert E. ‘Shep’ Shafer
FLOYD — Robert E. "Shep" Shafer, 83, of Floyd passed away peacefully in his sleep at the LutheranCare Nursing Home in Clinton on July 7, 2012.
Bob was born and brought up in the Rome area, and attended Westmoreland schools. He participated in many varsity sports, his favorite being football. He married the love of his life, Alice Falvey Benson on August 17, 1963, and gained and enjoyed an immediate family of four boys, Edward, Richard, Robert and Daniel.
Bob worked hard as a roofer for over 50 years, eventually retiring from Lawrence Rieben & Sons Roofing contractors of Whitesboro. He was a great outdoorsman, and many of his favorite times were spent hunting and fishing with his sons.
In addition to his wife of 48 years, Alice, he leaves behind four stepsons and their wives, Edward and Mary Ann Benson of New Hartford, Richard and Wende Benson of Boonville, Robert and Rose Benson of Dade City, FL, and Daniel and Lois Benson of Chandler, AZ; many special grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and many dear friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
Bob’s family extends a special thank you to the Lutheran Care facility, especially the Bryant Unit, for the loving and compassionate care given to Bob.
His funeral service will take place on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at the LutheranCare Chapel, 108-110 Utica Road, Clinton, NY. Visitation will precede the service, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a contribution in Bob’s memory to The Lutheran Homes Foundation, 108 Utica Road, Clinton, NY 13323. Envelopes will be available at the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, New Hartford.
